Make a Difference
Christ the King Preparatory School, as a member of the national Cristo Rey Network of schools, is “transforming urban America, one student at a time.” Nationwide, 96% of Cristo Rey graduates go on to attend college or university. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has contributed $15.9 million, and the Cassin Educational Initiative Foundation has given $10 million to the Cristo Rey Network, in order to assist in institutionally replicating Cristo Rey schools nationally. The Cristo Rey model has been featured on CBS’ 60 Minutes, and in Time and Newsweek. Christ the King Prep has been featured in Progressive Community Magazine, NJ Biz, PortViews, Reason Magazine, on ABC Eyewitness News and in The New York Times.
The Star Ledger calls Christ the King Prep a “Rey of Hope for Newark.” Newark Mayor Cory Booker calls Christ the King “a bright beacon of light for Newark.” Our corporate partners, like Judge John J. Gibbons of Gibbons, P.C., who provides a job for our students, adds: “There’s a lot of talent among the youngsters in these below-poverty-line families that is currently going to waste. We cannot afford to waste this talent.” In partnership with the corporate, business and philanthropic community, Christ the King Preparatory School is making a profound difference in the lives of Greater Newark area young people.
